During the British period, the colonial government introduced an entrance examination system after the completion of secondary school education according to the rules of the University of London. In 1955, the East Bengal Board of Secondary Education was renamed as East Pakistan Board of Secondary Education.

According to this system, the control and supervision of higher secondary education in East Pakistan is entrusted to the Dhaka Board. Later its name was again changed to the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
